The aim of SMIP is to facilitate the creation of an international cluster serving the oil and gas industry and maritime transport in the Barents Sea. Together with the town of Kirkenes with all its public services and private companies, the business idea of SMIP is to become the core in a "one stop shopping" concept.

Based on the close proximity to Russia, the huge oil and gas deposits in the Barents Sea, and the infrastructure and areas available close to the sea, a new industrial era has startet.

SMIP is located on a total area of 800 da, of which 80 da is directly connected to the sea-front and a deep water quay approx. 400 metres long (to be extended to 600 metres).
